Duties of the Justice of the Peace

The Justice of the Peace adjudicates class C misdemeanor cases punishable by fine only, including traffic tickets, penal code offenses, and hot checks.   J.P.s also enforce certain county and state ordinances; including environmental violations, illegal dumping, illegal towing, and burn bans.          

They have jurisdiction in all civil cases in which the amount of controversy is $10,000 or less. These may include tort cases and suits on account, landlord and tenant matters, evictions, matters concerning foreclosure of mortgages and enforcement of liens on personal property, and driver's license hearings.          

A Justice of the Peace may also issue warrants for search and arrest, conduct preliminary hearings, administers oaths, handle emergency protective orders, perform marriages and they are a Magistrate Judge and Coroner.

  • JUDGE KYLE D. BRADLEY is currently serving his fifth term as Justice of the Peace, Pct. 2 Atascosa County.     
  • Served his Country proudly for 31 years (7 years in the US Army and 24 years in the US Airforce),  Obtained the rank of Chief Master Sergeant (A rank only 1 percent may hold.) (JANUARY 1960---MAY 1991)   
  • He holds 5 air medals and the distinguished FLYING CROSS. 
  • He flew 103 combat missions in one 140 day period setting a record for his unit.   
  • He is a life member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars.   
  • Speaks and teaches regularly to the Judges and Court Clerks of our 5 County Judicial District.  
  •  He serves as a mentor Judge for many of his Colleagues.   
  • Was among the first group of  Justice(s) Of The Peace to be inducted as a Scholar in the Colleges of Judges and has been inducted every year since its creation.   
  • Life member of the Texas Justice Court Judge's Association and a life member of Texas Justice of the Peace and Constable Association.      
  • Judge Bradley will not accept publicity for Scholarships. He privately funds and also uses the fees from weddings and his funds to purchase shoes, glasses and food, prefferring to retain their dignity.
  • He personifies the quiet dignity and professionalism expected of our very best Judges every day, not just for public occasions.  
  • He is known for BRADLEY(ISMS) especially "THERE IS NO RIGHT WAY TO DO A WRONG THING."

  •  " A Judge shall not initiate, permit, or consider ex parte or other communications made to the Judge outside the presence of the parties...concerning the merits of a pending or impending judicial proceeding. A Judge shall require compliance with this subsection by court personnel subject to his or her direction and control..."
